Force and motion vocabulary review becomes a fast, friendly race with this Slap-It! card game. Students match science words such as lever, pulley and wedge to definition cards, defining sentences and pictures.
This vocabulary review game for force and simple machines works like the classic "Slap Jack" card game. A word card in the center tells players which definition to look for. Each word matches one or more definition cards, so students see a word from several angles: the standard definition, the word used in a defining sentence and a picture.
With this force and motion vocabulary game, you get
- Word cards for force and simple machines vocabulary
- Definition cards with standard definitions, defining sentences and pictures
- More than one definition card for each word
- Quick rules for 2-4 players
Print, shuffle and let the science review begin!

-
Easy to learn: Students who know Slap Jack can start playing right away.
-
Great before a test: Use the game as a quick unit review for force and simple machines.
-
Visual support: Picture cards help students connect each word to a real simple machine.
Skills Students Practice

-
Reading definitions: Students read each definition card and decide if it matches the word card.
-
Using context clues: Defining sentences show each word used in context.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the word cards and definition cards. For 2-4 players, place the WORD cards face down in a pile. Deal the DEFINITION cards equally among players and place them face down in a pile in front of each player. Decide the first player.
Step 2: Flip over one WORD card. In clockwise order, players flip one card at a time. When a DEFINITION card is flipped that matches the WORD card, SLAP-IT!
Step 3: The first player to slap the card takes the center pile of played cards and adds them to the bottom of their own pile. Flip another WORD card and continue playing. The game is finished when time is up or one player has all the DEFINITION cards.
Easy Differentiation
Students come to a science unit with different reading levels and background knowledge. These ideas help every student take part in the review.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with a few words and their matching cards
- Review each word and picture together before playing
- Let partners talk through a match before slapping
- Play with two players at first

- Play the game as written with 2-4 players
- Have the player who slaps read the definition aloud
- Use all of the word and definition cards
For an Extra Challenge
- Ask the player who slaps to give a real-life example of the simple machine
- Have students explain how the machine changes a force
- Have students write a new defining sentence for a word
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Focus on the picture cards first to build vocabulary
- Let students point to the match if slapping is hard
- Use a sentence frame such as "A ___ is a simple machine that ___."
- Give extra processing time before each card is flipped
