With 8 sets of fraction cards and clear instructions, this game helps students build fraction fluency in an engaging, low-prep format. Kids will love flipping and comparing fractions, while you'll love how easy it is to reinforce fraction concepts.

With this Fraction War card game, you get

  • 8 sets of printable fraction cards
  • Like denominators, unlike denominators and mixed sets
  • Easy-to-follow instructions for War-style play
  • Matching deck labels and teacher tips

Print, shuffle and let the comparing begin!

What's Included

  • 8 sets of printable fraction cards
  • Fraction values in various forms: like denominators, unlike denominators and mixed sets
  • Easy-to-follow instructions for standard War-style gameplay
  • Matching deck labels for organized storage
  • Teacher tips for prepping, printing and getting the most from the game

Print on card stock or laminate for durability. Want a fun visual twist? Use the white side of scrapbook paper for colorful, non-see-through backs!

Why Teachers Love It

  • A game students already know: Most students know how to play War, so they can jump right into comparing fractions.
  • Leveled sets: Start with like denominators and move to unlike denominators and mixed sets.
  • Lots of practice in a short time: Every flip asks students to compare two fractions.
  • Low prep: Print the cards, store each set with its deck label and the game is ready.
  • Works across grade levels: Use it for first practice or for review with older students.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Comparing fractions with like and unlike denominators: Students decide which fraction is greater in every round.
  • Understanding fractional value: Students reason about how the numerator and denominator affect a fraction's size.
  • Reading fraction symbols: Students link written fractions to the amounts they show.
  • Greater than and less than: Repeated comparisons build a strong sense of number relationships.
  • Equal fractions: When two fractions are equal, it's WAR, so students learn to spot fractions with the same value.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Maintaining attention
  • Using mathematical language
  • Communicating choices
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the fraction cards on card stock or laminate them. Back them with the white side of scrapbook paper if you like, and store each set with its matching deck label.

Step 2: Deal the cards evenly between two players, who stack them face down. Both players flip one card at the same time. The player with the greater fraction wins both cards and adds them to their pile.

Step 3: If the fractions are equal, it's WAR! Each player lays down three cards face down, then flips a fourth. The higher fraction wins all cards in the round. Keep playing until one player runs out of cards or time is up. The player with the most cards wins!

Easy Differentiation

Students come to fractions with very different levels of understanding. The 8 sets make it easy to give each student the right level of practice.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with the like denominator sets
  • Let students use fraction strips or drawings to check each round
  • Have students say both fractions aloud before comparing
  • Play in teams so partners can talk through each comparison

For On-Level Practice

  • Use the sets that match the skills your class is working on now
  • Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "3/4 is greater than 1/4"
  • Rotate a new set through math centers each week

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the unlike denominator and mixed sets
  • Have students record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
  • Ask students to explain how they knew which fraction was greater
  • Time a round and challenge students to beat their own score

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice math vocabulary such as numerator, denominator, greater than and less than
  • Use a sentence frame such as "My fraction is greater because ___."
  • Reduce the deck size for shorter games
  • Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play

Perfect For

  • Math centers and station rotations
  • Guided math and RTI small groups
  • Partner games
  • Early finishers
  • Spiral review and test prep
  • Enrichment groups
  • Tutoring
  • Substitute plans
  • Homeschool
