What’s Included in the Fairy Tales I Spy Game Set

  • 10 full-color I Spy game boards – Each board is packed with fairy tale images like castles, glass slippers, crowns, magic mirrors, and dragons, giving students endless opportunities to strengthen visual discrimination skills and scan for detail.
  • 40 fairy tale image cards – Children flip over bright cards to “spy” the matching picture on their board. The set includes a wide variety of magical images such as a prince, princess, frog, carriage, wand, rainbow, shield, and enchanted book.
  • 20 printable tokens – Use the included star tokens, or swap them out for mini erasers, bingo chips, or buttons to add a sensory play element and fine motor practice. Tokens provide motivation and help track progress.
  • Teacher-friendly instructions – Step-by-step directions make this I Spy fairy tale game quick and easy to use in small groups, centers, or therapy sessions.

Skills Strengthened with the Fairy Tales I Spy Board Game

Language and Literacy Skills

  • Build vocabulary with repeated exposure to fairy tale words like castle, crown, prince, princess, dragon, unicorn, and glass slipper.
  • Practice articulation by encouraging students to say each word aloud as they play, making this an excellent activity for speech therapy.
  • Support ELL and ESL learners with image-to-word matching that builds expressive and receptive language skills.

Cognitive and Visual Perception Skills

  • Strengthen visual discrimination and scanning by spotting details in busy fairy tale scenes.
  • Improve focus, attention, and problem-solving skills as students race to find matches.
  • Encourage flexible thinking by adapting the game for independent or competitive play.

Social-Emotional and Fine Motor Skills

  • Practice turn-taking, cooperation, and positive peer interaction during small group play.
  • Use tokens, counters, or mini erasers for a fine motor challenge, giving kids a hands-on sensory experience.
  • Build confidence as students successfully find matches and collect tokens in a fun, low-pressure setting.

How to Play the Fairy Tales I Spy Game

  1. Choose a fairy tale game board filled with magical objects and place it in the center.
  2. Deal image cards face-down to each player or draw from a shared pile.
  3. On each turn, players flip their top card at the same time.
  4. Race to “spy” the matching image on the board – the first player to point to it wins a token.
  5. Keep playing until all the cards are used. The player with the most tokens at the end is the winner!
Independent Play Option: Students can use one board and flip through the image cards on their own, covering each match with a token. This is perfect for quiet literacy centers or early finisher activities.

Perfect For:

  • Speech therapy articulation practice – Target specific sounds with vocabulary-rich fairy tale words while keeping sessions playful.
  • ELL and ESL vocabulary development – Strengthen expressive language through visual supports in a familiar theme.
  • Occupational therapy activities – Focus on visual scanning, visual discrimination, and fine motor practice in a motivating sensory activity.
  • Sub plans and early finishers – Easy to prep, simple to explain, and highly engaging, making it a lifesaver for substitute teachers or busy classrooms.
  • Indoor recess and rainy day centers – Keep kids active, focused, and having fun when outdoor play isn’t possible.
  • Homeschool learning and family game time – A perfect blend of learning and fun for siblings or parent-led practice.

Standards Alignment

✔ Texas Pre-K Guidelines: Supports vocabulary growth, communication, and phonological awareness through playful repetition.
✔ Virginia ELDS: Encourages cooperative play, sustained attention, and early literacy skills.
✔ Common Core ELA Standards:

  • SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with peers and adults.
  • L.K.6: Use new vocabulary through guided play.
  • RF.K.4: Connect spoken words with visuals to strengthen comprehension.

Bonus Play Options:

In independent play, a single student works through the deck of image cards on their own. They flip one card at a time, search for the matching picture on the game board, and cover it with a mini eraser or token.

This option is perfect for building focus, visual scanning, and vocabulary skills without the pressure of competing against others.

In parallel play, two students each have their own I Spy game board and set of cards. They play side-by-side, flipping and matching cards at their own pace.

This approach works well for children who need personal space, are just beginning to join group activities, or who thrive in a more relaxed, non-competitive environment.
