Simple fractions card game fun with a slightly competitive twist! In this Slap It! game, students learn to connect simple fractions with pictures, words, numbers and optionally, decimals. It becomes even more fun when turkeys and pumpkin pie are involved!

This game is a modified form of the old favorite "Slap Jack." The difference is that there is a center pile in addition to the player piles. The card flipped over in the center pile shows which card players are looking to slap. Once a player slaps the matching card, a new center card is flipped and the search starts again.

With this simple fractions card game, you get

  • Fraction cards in picture, word and number formats
  • Optional decimal cards for an added challenge
  • A fast Slap It! game for 2-4 players
  • Easy differentiation by choosing which format is the CENTER pile

It is a great partner or small group center!

What's Included

  • Simple fraction cards in four formats: pictures, words, numbers and decimals (the decimal cards are optional)
  • Slap It! game instructions

Why Teachers Love It

  • Several ways to see each fraction: Pictures, words and numbers help children understand what a fraction means.
  • Fast and engaging: Slap It! keeps every player watching each card.
  • Flexible practice: Choose any format for the CENTER pile so children review the part they find hardest.
  • Built-in challenge: Add the decimal cards when children are ready.
  • Timely for fall: Turkeys and pumpkin pie make it a natural fit for November and Thanksgiving centers.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Fractions as equal parts: Picture cards show shapes divided and shaded into fractional amounts.
  • Reading fraction words: Children match each picture to its fraction name.
  • Fraction numbers: Children connect each fraction picture and word to the way it is written in numbers.
  • Fractions and decimals: The optional decimal cards show how a fraction can also be written as a decimal.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Using mathematical language
  • Waiting during group play
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Create a deck of 10-20 cards for the CENTER pile. Use the other matching cards as PLAYING cards. For a group of 2 players, 30-40 PLAYING cards are recommended. (More copies will create a longer game.)

Step 2: With 2-4 players, place the CENTER cards face down in a pile. Deal the PLAYING cards equally among players and place them face down in a pile in front of each player. Decide the first player and flip over one CENTER card.

Step 3: In clockwise order, players flip one card at a time. When a PLAYING card matches the CENTER card: SLAP-IT! (Matches will be in many formats.) The first player to slap the card takes the center pile of cards that have been played and adds them to the bottom of their own pile. Flip over another CENTER card and keep playing. The game is finished when time is up or one player has all the PLAYING cards.

Easy Differentiation

Children build fraction sense at different paces. These cards are easy to adjust for every learner.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Use the picture cards for the CENTER pile so children can see each fraction
  • Start with only two formats, such as pictures and words
  • Use a smaller CENTER deck for a shorter game
  • Name each fraction together before playing

For On-Level Practice

  • Play with the picture, word and number cards
  • Say the fraction aloud each time a match is slapped
  • Choose a different format for the CENTER pile each game

For an Extra Challenge

  • Add the optional decimal cards
  • Make the number or decimal cards the CENTER pile
  • Ask children to explain how they know two cards match

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Say each fraction name clearly as the card is flipped
  • Use a language frame such as "This shows one ___."
  • Have children point to a match if slapping is hard
  • Play with fewer cards and fewer players
  • Give extra processing time before each turn
