Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Real skill practice: Every round builds matching, visual scanning and visual discrimination.
  • Time practice in a game: Children look closely at analog and digital clocks as they race to find each time.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and you are ready to play in minutes.
  • Flexible group sizes: Play with 2-4 kids, adapt it for small groups or print extra sets of cards to extend the fun.
  • Built to last: Print on card stock and laminate for a center that is ready all year. With 10 game boards to choose from, repeat play stays fresh.
  • Doubles as a vocabulary game: Naming each clock picture gives children new words to learn and use.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game on card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper. Laminate for durability and cut apart the picture cards and token cards.

Step 2: Deal the picture cards equally among players, face down. Everyone flips over their top card at the same time and races to find that picture on the I Spy board.

Step 3: The first player to find the picture wins a token. The player with the most tokens at the end wins the game!

Materials You'll Need

  • Card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper
  • Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Name each picture together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Start with only the times to the hour
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with 2-4 players
  • Read each time out loud when you find it
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won
  • Rotate through different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use more game boards and the full set of picture cards
  • Say each time a new way, such as "half past ten" for 10:30
  • Show the time on a real or toy clock before claiming a token
  • Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice time words such as hour, half past and o'clock as children name each picture
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy ___ o'clock."
  • Use it as a vocabulary game with RTI or intervention groups
  • Have children point to or cover the picture when they find it
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Telling time units
  • RTI and small groups
  • Partner games
