  • Easy to stretch: Print extra sets of picture cards for longer games or bigger groups.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Visual scanning and visual discrimination: Players search a busy game board to find matching pictures in different sizes and positions.
  • Matching: Each round asks children to match the picture on their card to one of many similar pictures on the board, building attention to detail.
  • Vocabulary: Children name the Valentine's Day objects they spy and connect words to pictures, from hearts and gifts to balloons and cupcakes.
  • Focus and attention: Because it's a race, kids stay engaged and ready to react, which builds concentration.
  • Quick thinking and strategy: Players learn to spot patterns on the board and find pictures faster each round.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Winning and losing gracefully
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print on card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper and laminate for durability. Cut apart the picture cards and token cards.

Step 2: Deal the picture cards equally among players, face down. Everyone flips over their top card at the same time and races to find their picture on the I Spy board.

Step 3: The first player to find their picture wins a token. Keep playing until the cards are gone. The player with the most tokens at the end wins the game!

Materials You'll Need

  • Card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper
  • Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Name each Valentine's Day picture together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with 2-4 players
  • Name each picture out loud when you find it
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won
  • Rotate through different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Print extra sets of picture cards for a longer game
  • Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "next to the balloon"
  • Name the color of each picture as you find it
  • Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the picture cards as prompts for labeling and describing Valentine's Day objects
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Set up one board with a stack of cards for calm, independent practice without pressure to compete
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy or math center warm-ups
  • Small groups and partner play
  • RTI and intervention groups
  • Early finishers and rainy day fun
  • ELL support
  • Valentine's Day theme units
  • Homeschool
