How to Use It
Step 1: Print and prep all materials. Use cardstock and laminate the I Spy boards, letter cards and tokens for durability. Cut out all the pieces.
Step 2: Deal the letter cards evenly between 2-4 players and place them face down in individual stacks. Each player flips their top card and races to find the matching letter on the I Spy board.
Step 3: The first player to spot their letter wins a token card. Continue until all letter cards have been flipped. The player with the most tokens at the end is the winner!
Additional Ways to Play
-
Independent Play: Give one student a full letter card stack and a single board. Let them flip a card, search for the matching letter and cover it with a mini eraser or counter. This is perfect for centers, morning tubs or quiet time.
-
Parallel Play: Use two boards and split the card stack between two players. Each player plays independently on their own board, reducing distractions and allowing more personal space while still building social engagement.
Materials You'll Need
- Cardstock
- Laminating pouches and a laminator
- Mini erasers or counters (for independent play)
Easy Differentiation

For Children Who Need More Support
- Use independent play with one board and a small stack of letter cards
- Name each letter together before searching
- Point to the area of the board where the letter can be found
- Play without the race so children can search at their own pace
For On-Level Practice
- Play the Flip game as written with 2-4 players
- Name each letter out loud when you find it
- Rotate through different game boards
- Count tokens at the end to see who won
For an Extra Challenge
- Say the sound of the letter before claiming the token card
- Name a word that begins with the letter
- Tell whether each letter is uppercase or lowercase
- Describe where the letter is on the board
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice letter names and articulation as children name each letter
- Use parallel play for children who benefit from individual space
