Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Following directions
  • Listening to classmates
  • Waiting during group play
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Choose your center pile. Use punctuation symbols, definitions or sample sentences as your base deck and place the CENTER cards face down. Divide the rest of the cards evenly among 2-4 players.

Step 2: Flip a CENTER card. Players take turns flipping cards in clockwise order. When a card matches the current center card, players race to slap it first!

Step 3: The first player to slap the correct match adds the played cards to their pile. Play continues until all cards are used or time is up. The player with the most cards wins!

Easy Differentiation

Students come to punctuation with very different levels of experience. These variations make the game work for every learner.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with the basics: periods, question marks and exclamation points
  • Play with just two formats, such as symbols and sentence examples
  • Print extra copies of familiar punctuation marks to build a full deck without overwhelming beginners
  • Play slowly as a matching game before adding the race

For On-Level Practice

  • Add new punctuation symbols as students master the basics
  • Add the definition cards once students know the symbols
  • Have students name each mark as they slap it
  • Play with partners in literacy centers

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the marks students struggle with most as your center cards
  • Play with all three card formats at once
  • Ask the player who slaps to explain how the cards match
  • Have students write their own sentence using the matched mark

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the symbol and sentence cards to practice grammar vocabulary
  • Read the sentence cards aloud with expression to show how each mark changes the sentence
  • Have students point to or touch the match if slapping is hard
  • Use a short language frame such as "This is a ___."
  • Give extra processing time before each card is flipped

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers for writing mechanics
  • Small group grammar review
  • Partner games
  • Early finisher or morning tub activities
  • Homeschool grammar lessons
