Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each animal first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Real skill practice: Every round builds matching, visual scanning and visual discrimination.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and you are ready to play in minutes.
  • Flexible group sizes: Play with 2-4 kids, adapt it for small groups or print extra sets of cards to extend the fun.
  • Doubles as a vocabulary game: The pictures help English Language Learners connect words to real-world animals.
  • Works for a wide age range: Preschoolers through tweens enjoy the challenge.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Visual scanning and visual discrimination: Players search a busy game board to find matching pictures in different sizes and positions.
  • Matching: Each round asks children to match the picture on their card to one of many similar pictures on the board, building attention to detail.
  • Focus and attention: Because it is a race, children stay fully engaged and ready to react.
  • Vocabulary: Children name animals such as a frog, turtle, zebra and penguin as they play.
  • Quick thinking and strategy: Players learn to spot patterns and develop faster strategies for recognizing pictures.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Winning and losing gracefully
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the game on card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper. Laminate for durability and cut apart the game cards and token cards.

Step 2: Deal the picture cards equally among players, face down. Everyone flips over their top card at the same time and races to find that animal on the I Spy board.

Step 3: The first player to find the picture wins a token. The player with the most tokens at the end wins the game!

Materials You'll Need

  • Card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper
  • Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Name each animal together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with 2-4 players
  • Name each animal out loud when you find it
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won
  • Rotate through different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use more game boards and the full set of picture cards
  • Describe where the animal is on the board, such as "next to the lion"
  • Tell whether each animal lives on a farm, in the wild or in the ocean
  • Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice animal vocabulary and target words as children name each picture
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Use it as a vocabulary game with RTI or intervention groups
  • Have children point to or cover the picture when they find it
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy or math center warm-ups
  • RTI and small groups
  • Partner games
  • Animal theme units
  • Early finishers
  • Rainy day fun and indoor recess
  • ELL support
  • Homeschool
