Why Teachers Love It
-
Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
-
Real skill practice: Every round builds matching, visual scanning and visual discrimination.
-
Ways to play for every learner: Play as a group race, on your own or side by side with a partner.
-
Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and you are ready to play in minutes.
-
Repeat play stays fresh: With 10 different boards, children are less likely to remember where every picture is hiding.
-
Doubles as a vocabulary game: Naming tools, vehicles and safety gear gives children new words to learn and use.

How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game on card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper. Laminate for durability and cut apart the picture cards and token cards.
Step 2: Deal the picture cards equally among players, face down. Everyone flips over their top card at the same time and races to find that picture on the I Spy board.
Step 3: The first player to find the picture wins a token. The player with the most tokens at the end wins the game!
Independent Play
I Spy is perfect for morning tubs or solo centers. Give one child an I Spy game board and the stack of flip cards. As they find each picture, they can cover it with a mini eraser or game piece.
Parallel Play
Offer each child their own I Spy game board and cards. They play side by side without needing to compete, which is ideal for sensory-sensitive students or learners who need clear boundaries. Two players can play independently with identical boards and cards.
Materials You'll Need
- Card stock or the white side of scrapbook paper
- Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)
Easy Differentiation
Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Play independently with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
- Name each picture together before the game begins
- Cover each picture with a mini eraser or game piece as it is found

For On-Level Practice

- Name each picture out loud when you find it
- Count tokens at the end to see who won
- Rotate through different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Use more game boards and the full set of picture cards
- Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "next to the bulldozer"
- Print extra sets of cards for larger groups
- Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice construction vocabulary, articulation and target words as children name each picture
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
- Offer parallel play for children who need social time without shared materials
- Have children point to or cover the picture when they find it
- Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
