CVC word Easter baskets give kindergarten students 162 CVC words to build with colorful egg letters. CVC words are three-letter words with a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, such as jam and dad.

Children read the word on each basket and build it with the egg letter cards. Most word families are separated, so you can print just the families you want for your spring literacy centers.

With this Easter CVC word building activity, you get

  • 162 CVC words to practice
  • Easter basket word cards organized by word family
  • Egg letter cards with only the consonants needed for these words
  • Black and white versions of the words and eggs
  • Independent or partner word building for spring centers

Print, cut and let the egg hunt for letters begin.

How to Use It

Materials You'll Need

  • Card stock or lamination for durability
  • Multiple copies of the egg letter pages
  • Envelopes or very small zip-top bags for storage

Step 1: Print your choice of pages 4-30 on card stock or laminate for durability. Cut out the cards and select the word families you want for your students. Print multiple copies of pages 31-32 depending on how many words you want students to make at the same time.

Step 2: Give students the baskets you want them to work on and multiple copies of the letters. Put the letters they will be working with in an envelope or a very small zip-top bag for easy storage.

Step 3: Students work independently or in pairs to build the CVC words shown on the baskets with the egg letters.

Easy Differentiation

Beginning readers move at different speeds. Choosing the word families and the number of baskets keeps every child working at the right level.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with one word family at a time
  • Say each sound slowly together before building
  • Give only the letters needed for one word
  • Work in pairs with a supportive partner

For On-Level Practice

  • Build several words from one word family
  • Read each word aloud after building it
  • Use the black and white pages for extra practice
  • Work independently at a literacy center

For an Extra Challenge

  • Mix baskets from different word families
  • Build a word, then change one letter to make a new word
  • Write each word after building it
  • Build all the words in a family and read them to a partner

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Model each sound and point to the matching egg letter
  • Use a short language frame such as "I built the word ___."
  • Practice picking up and placing letters for fine motor work
  • Use fewer baskets at a time
  • Give extra processing time and model the first word
