Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: Quick rounds and friendly competition keep every player watching the board.

  • Easy prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the cards and the game is ready.
  • More than one way to play: Independent and parallel play options support children who prefer solo work or benefit from less social pressure.
  • Doubles as a vocabulary game: Naming farm animals and tools is a great fit for speech therapy, RTI groups and ELL learners.
  • Fits a farm theme or any week: Use it during a farm unit or anytime you want a fun, low-prep center.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Visual discrimination and scanning: Kids quickly locate target pictures among similar, busy farm scenes.
  • Matching and comparing: Children match their card to an identical picture on the board, building focus and attention to detail.
  • Object recognition and vocabulary: Naming and finding items like tractors, goats and pitchforks builds early vocabulary.
  • Speech and language development: Describing pictures and listening to others builds expressive and receptive language.
  • Quick thinking: Players sharpen their reaction time and visual search strategies as they race to spot pictures.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Winning and losing gracefully
  • Working independently
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print and laminate the I Spy boards, picture cards and token cards. Cut apart the cards.

Step 2: Deal the picture cards evenly to 2-4 players, who stack their cards face down. All players flip their top card at the same time and race to find the matching picture on the game board.

Step 3: The first player to find their picture wins a token card. Keep flipping and spotting until all the cards have been used. The player with the most tokens at the end wins!

More Ways to Play

  • Independent Play: Give one child a board and a stack of picture cards. They find and cover each picture using counters, mini erasers or dry-erase markers. Great for morning tubs, early finishers or quiet centers.
  • Parallel Play: Give each child their own board and separate cards. They search on their own while still enjoying side-by-side social time.

Easy Differentiation

Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Name each farm picture together before the game begins
  • Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
  • Use the independent play version so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with 2-4 players
  • Name each picture out loud when you find it
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won
  • Rotate through different game boards

For an Extra Challenge

  • Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "next to the barn"
  • Give a clue about a picture, such as "it says oink," and have players find it
  • Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out
  • Sort the picture cards into animals and other farm items after the game

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Use the picture cards as prompts for labeling and describing farm animals and tools
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Use parallel play for children who prefer solo work with a social twist
  • Hide picture cards in a sensory bin for children to find and match
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy, math or theme center warm-ups
  • RTI groups and small group interventions
  • Speech therapy and occupational therapy
  • Early finishers and transition time
  • Sensory bins and visual focus activities
  • Indoor recess and sub plans
  • ELL vocabulary development
  • Farm theme units
  • Homeschool families looking for hands-on learning
