Decimal place value War card game practice that builds real confidence with decimals! This fast-paced math center is played like the classic card game "War," but every card shows a decimal. Partners flip, compare and the greater decimal wins the round.
The 9 color-coded sets cover decimal values from units through the tenths, hundredths and thousandths places, so you can start with simple comparisons and move to trickier ones such as 1.749 and 1.743. Each round asks students to look closely at the value of every digit, and quick repetition helps decimal place value stick.
With this decimal place value War card game, you get
- 9 color-coded sets of decimal comparison cards
- Decimal values from units through thousandths
- Coordinating deck labels for easy storage
- A comparing decimal place values worksheet and answer key
Print, shuffle and your decimal review is ready to play!

Why Teachers Love It
-
A game students already know: Most students know how to play War, so they can put their energy into the math.
-
Leveled for growth: Nine sets let you move from tenths to hundredths to thousandths as students are ready.
-
Lots of practice in a short time: Every flip is another decimal comparison, so students get many repetitions in one game.
-
Built-in accountability: The worksheet and answer key give you a quick way to check individual understanding.
-
Low prep and reusable: Print on card stock or laminate the cards, and back them with scrapbook paper for extra color and card opacity.
-
Students love the movement: Partners choose where to work and talk through their comparisons together.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Comparing decimals: Students compare decimals to the tenths, hundredths and thousandths places.
-
Decimal place value: Students use the value of each digit to decide which decimal is greater.
-
Greater than, less than and equal to: Every round asks students to decide which value is greater or whether the values are equal.
-
Number magnitude: Students notice how a small change in one digit changes the value of the whole number.
-
Reading decimals: Students build fluency reading decimals aloud and understanding what they mean.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Using mathematical language
- Communicating choices
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print the decimal sets on card stock or laminate them for long-term use. Cut the cards apart and store each set with its coordinating deck label.
Step 2: Deal the cards evenly between two players, who keep their decks face down. Both players flip their top card at the same time and compare the decimals. Whoever has the greater value keeps both cards and places them at the bottom of their stack.
Step 3: If the cards are equal, it's War! Players each place three cards face down and flip a fourth. The highest decimal wins the entire pile. Keep playing until one player runs out of cards or time runs out. The player with the most cards wins. Follow up with the comparing decimal place values worksheet for individual practice.
Easy Differentiation
Students come to decimals with different levels of place value understanding. These ideas help every student play the same game at the right level.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the sets that use tenths before adding hundredths and thousandths
- Keep a place value chart nearby so students can line up the digits
- Have students read each decimal aloud before comparing
- Play in teams so partners can talk through each comparison
For On-Level Practice
- Use the sets that match the decimal places your class is working on now
- Have students state each comparison aloud, such as "4.36 is greater than 4.24"
- Use the worksheet as a quick check after the game
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the sets with decimals to the thousandths
- Ask students to record each comparison with the >, < or = symbol
- Have students explain which digit decided the winner of each round
- Challenge students to put a handful of cards in order from least to greatest
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math vocabulary such as tenths, hundredths, thousandths, greater than and less than
- Use a sentence frame such as "___ is greater than ___ because ___."
- Reduce the deck size for shorter games
- Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play
Perfect For
- Math centers and rotations
- Partner games
- Small groups and RTI
- Early finishers
- Test prep and spiral review
- Tutoring sessions
- Special education classrooms
- Substitute plans
- Homeschool

★★★★★ Joleen M. wrote, “Students like being able to collaborate and move. This gives them the opportunity to choose a partner and work where they want...that alone makes it a win. They prefer over a worksheet or IXL any day! Thanks for this option. Being a non-digital native, makes my life much easier!”
★★★★★ Jessie L. wrote, “This game was a fun way to practice math skills during my tutoring session.”
Add the Decimal Place Value War Card Game to your cart and give your students a fast, low-prep way to compare decimals from the tenths to the thousandths. Print the cards, pair up partners and watch decimal confidence grow with every flip!
