Frog number lines that get students hopping through adding and subtracting within 20! This life-size frog number line helps students picture a number line in their minds by moving along one with their whole body. Set out the frogs on the floor or wall, draw a card and hop "frog-style" up and down the line to solve each problem.
Students practice number order, counting forward, counting backward, more than and less than language, missing addends, missing subtrahends, skip counting and more. Four levels of cards make it easy to start simple and build up to finding missing numbers.
With these frog number lines, you get
- Frogs numbered 0-20 for a life-size number line, in full color and black and white
- Four levels of hopping cards, from "Start at 2. Hop forward 3." to missing addends
- Card sets split into within 10 and within 20 for easy printing
- A page of frog heads for making frog headbands
Line up the frogs and let the hopping begin!
What's Included
- Frogs numbered 0-20 in full color
- Frogs numbered 0-20 in black and white
- A page of "frog heads" that can be attached to strips of paper to make a headband
- Four types of cards:
- Introductory: "Start at 2. Hop forward 3."
- Level two: "3 More than 6."
- Level three: 4+5= (in vertical format)
- Level four: "Start at 5. How many hops to 8?" (missing addends and subtrahends)
- All four levels further divided for ease of printing: addition and subtraction within 10 and addition and subtraction within 20 (not included in the within 10 sets)
Why Teachers Love It
-
Makes number lines concrete: Hopping along a life-size line helps students see what happens when they count on or count back.
-
Gets students moving: Gross motor math keeps active learners engaged while they solve problems.
-
Four levels in one set: Start with simple hopping directions and move up to missing addends and subtrahends.
-
Easy to print what you need: Within 10 and within 20 sets let you match the cards to your students.
-
Ink-friendly option: The black-and-white frogs look great printed on green paper and laminated.
-
Room to grow: Use the same number line for even and odd numbers and turnaround facts.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Number order: Students place and follow the frogs from 0 to 20.
-
Counting forward and backward: Each hop up or down the line is one more or one less.
-
Addition and subtraction within 20: Students act out problems such as "Start at 2. Hop forward 3." and 4+5=.
-
More than and less than: Level two cards such as "3 More than 6." build comparing language.
-
Missing addends and subtrahends: Level four cards ask "How many hops to 8?" so students find the missing number.
-
Skip counting and even and odd numbers: Students hop on only even or only odd numbers.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Following directions
- Taking turns
- Waiting during group play
- Listening to classmates
- Using mathematical language
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print the frogs and cards. Printing the cards on card stock and/or laminating them helps them last. The black-and-white frogs look great printed on green paper and laminated.
Step 2: Lay the frogs in order from 0 to 20 to make a life-size number line on the floor or wall. Add frog headbands for extra fun.
Step 3: Students choose a card and show the problem by hopping "frog-style" up and down the number line. Try making a "pond" by covering a shoe box with blue tissue paper, then have students close their eyes and draw a card out of the pond.
Materials You'll Need
- Card stock (for the cards)
- Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)
- Strips of paper for the frog headbands
- Green paper for the black-and-white frogs (optional)
- A shoe box and blue tissue paper for the "pond" (optional)
Easy Differentiation
Every student is at a different place with counting and number lines. The four card levels make it simple to give each one the right challenge.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Start with the introductory "Start at 2. Hop forward 3." cards
- Use only the within 10 cards
- Count each hop out loud together
- Have a partner point to the starting frog before hopping
For On-Level Practice
- Move to the level two "More than" cards
- Solve the level three vertical problems by hopping
- Work through the within 20 cards
- Draw cards from the pond and solve them in small groups
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the level four missing addend and subtrahend cards
- Start at 2 and hop on even numbers, or start at 1 and hop on odd numbers
- Give two students turnaround problems such as 4+5 and 5+4 and have them jump at the same time
- Ask students to explain how they found the missing number
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Practice math words such as forward, backward, more than and less than
- Use a short language frame such as "I start at ___ and hop ___."
- Build gross motor skills, balance and coordination with each frog hop
- Let students step rather than hop when balance is a concern
- Give extra processing time and model the first hop
Perfect For
- Math centers
- Small groups
- Whole group movement breaks
- Frog and pond theme units
- Indoor recess
- Intervention
- Special education classrooms
- OT sessions
- Homeschool
Standards
These frog number lines support kindergarten and 1st grade math standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):
Common Core State Standards
-
CCSS K.OA.A.1: Represent addition and subtraction with objects, acting out situations and equations. Hopping along the line acts out each problem.
-
CCSS K.CC.A.2: Count forward beginning from a given number, such as "Start at 5."
-
CCSS 1.OA.C.5: Relate counting to addition and subtraction, such as counting on 3 hops to add 3.
-
CCSS 1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20.
-
CCSS 1.OA.D.8: Find the unknown number in an addition or subtraction equation, such as how many hops from 5 to 8.
-
CCSS 1.OA.B.3: Apply properties of operations, such as solving 4+5 and 5+4 side by side.
Texas TEKS
-
TEKS Math K.2.A: Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects.
-
TEKS Math K.3.A: Model joining to show addition and separating to show subtraction by hopping forward and back.
-
TEKS Math 1.3.D: Apply basic fact strategies to add and subtract within 20.
-
TEKS Math 1.5.F: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation.
Virginia SOL
-
VA SOL Math K.NS.1.c: Represent forward counting by ones using number paths, a first step toward number lines.
-
VA SOL Math 1.CE.1.e: Solve addition and subtraction problems within 20 using different strategies.
-
VA SOL Math 1.NS.1.b: Count backward by ones from a given number.
Add the Frog Number Lines to your cart and have a life-size, hop-along number line ready for adding and subtracting within 20. Print the frogs, lay out the line and watch your students count on, count back and find missing numbers one hop at a time!
