Unicorn counting activities for numbers 1-20 that add a little sparkle to your math centers! The Unicorn Theme Numbers 1-20 Counting Activities pack gives preschool and kindergarten learners hands-on practice with rainbow counting mats, ten-frames, number tracing and a roll and count mat.
Grab your counting cubes or other counters and have a blast counting from 1-20. Children work on ten-frames, number recognition, number words, number tracing and one-to-one correspondence as they show each number. A ten-frame is a grid of ten boxes that helps children see and count numbers at a glance.
With this unicorn counting pack, you get
- Six counting activities for numbers 1-20
- Unicorn rainbow counting mats in color and in black and white
- Fine motor mats that pair ten-frames with number tracing
- Find and trace cards, ten-frame clip cards and number cards
- Easy options to differentiate for every learner
Laminate a set once and count with unicorns year after year.
What's Included
- Unicorn Rainbow Counting Mats (Color and Black/White)
- Fine Motor Mats with Ten-Frames and Number Tracing
- Roll and Count Mat
- Find and Trace Cards with Tracing Mats for 1-10 and 1-20

Why Teachers Love It
-
Six ways to practice: Counting mats, fine motor mats, find and trace cards, clip cards, number cards and a dice mat give children repeated counting practice in different formats.
-
Counting and writing together: The fine motor mats pair each ten-frame with number tracing.
-
Printer-friendly: The counting mats are also included in black and white for easy printing if you do not have access to a color printer.
-
Use the counters you have: Counting cubes or other counters all work.
-
Saves on laminating: Slip the counting mats and the Roll and Count mat into write and wipe pockets and reuse them again and again.
-
Kids love the theme: Rainbows and unicorns keep counting practice fresh.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Counting to 20: Children practice numbers 1-20 across mats, ten-frames, clip cards and number cards.
-
Number recognition: Children connect numerals, number words and quantities in every activity.
-
One-to-one correspondence: Placing one counter for each space shows that each number stands for a specific amount.
-
Ten-frame practice: Filling in ten-frames builds a strong foundation for place value and early addition.
-
Number tracing: The fine motor mats and find and trace cards give children practice forming numerals.
-
Dice counting: On the Roll and Count mat, children read the dots on a die, match the number word and count out that many cubes.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Following directions
- Working independently
- Maintaining attention
- Using mathematical language
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print the activities and laminate them for centers, or slip the counting mats and the Roll and Count mat into write and wipe pockets. Print the black and white counting mats if you do not have access to a color printer.
Step 2: Model one mat with the whole group. Show a number with counting cubes on the ten-frame, then trace the number together.
Step 3: Place the counting mats, fine motor mats, find and trace cards, clip cards and roll and count mat in your math centers. Rotate them so the activities stay fresh.
Materials You'll Need
- Counting cubes or other counters
- Write and wipe pockets or a laminator (to save on laminating, use write and wipe pockets for the counting mats and the Roll and Count mat)
Easy Differentiation
Young learners count with very different levels of confidence. These activities make it easy to give each child the right amount of support.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Begin with numbers 1-10 before moving to 11-20
- Use the find and trace tracing mats for 1-10
- Count together while touching each counter
- Start with a few clip cards at a time
For On-Level Practice
- Fill in the rainbow counting mats independently
- Show each number on the fine motor mats, then trace it
- Complete the ten-frame clip cards
- Use the Roll and Count mat with a partner
For an Extra Challenge
- Use the find and trace tracing mats for 1-20
- Put the number cards for 1-20 in order
- Show the same number two ways, on a ten-frame and on a rainbow counting mat
- Tell how many more counters are needed to fill the ten-frame
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Say each number and number word aloud together
- Use the fine motor mats and clip cards for fine motor practice in OT sessions
- Offer larger counters for children building hand control
- Use the black and white counting mats to reduce visual clutter
- Give extra processing time and model each step first
Perfect For
- Math centers
- Small groups
- Whole class carpet time
- Intervention
- Special education classrooms
- Unicorn and rainbow themes
- Early finishers
- Homeschool
Standards
These unicorn counting activities support the 2022 Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards (2021), plus kindergarten math standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):
Common Core State Standards
-
CCSS K.CC.A.3: Write numbers 0-20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. The fine motor mats pair each traced number with a ten-frame.
-
CCSS K.CC.B.4.a: Say number names in order while pairing each object with one number.
-
CCSS K.CC.B.5: Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things, and count out that many objects when given a number from 1-20.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
-
Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.A.2: Count up to 10 objects, touching one object for each number, as children place counters on the ten-frames and rainbow mats.
-
Texas Pre-K Guidelines PK4.V.A.5: Recognize numerals 0-10 on the number cards and clip cards.
Texas TEKS
-
TEKS Math K.2.B: Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures.
-
TEKS Math K.2.C: Count a set of objects and show that the last number said tells how many.
Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards
-
Virginia ELDS CD3.1: Compare numbers, count and recognize quantities with ten-frames and counting mats.
Virginia SOL
-
VA SOL Math K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set.
-
VA SOL Math K.NS.1.c: Represent forward counting by ones with tools such as ten-frames.
-
VA SOL Math K.NS.2.a: Read, write and identify numerals, practiced here from 1-20.
-
VA SOL Math K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects that matches a given numeral, such as showing 18 counters on a rainbow mat.
Add the Unicorn Theme Numbers 1-20 Counting Activities to your cart and have six hands-on counting activities ready for your math centers. Grab the counting cubes and watch your learners build counting, number recognition and ten-frame skills all the way to 20!
The Unicorn Counting Activities are also included in the 1-20 Counting Activities BUNDLE.
