How to Use It
Step 1: Print the image cards, I Spy game boards and tokens on cardstock and laminate for long-term use. Cut apart the cards.
Step 2: Set up for 2-4 players by dealing the cards face down in front of each player. Each player flips their top card at the same time and searches the board to find the matching I Spy object pictured on their card.
Step 3: The first to find it wins a token! Continue playing until all cards have been used, then count the tokens to see who spotted the most images and won the game.
More Ways to Play
-
Independent learning: Give students one I Spy game board and the full set of image cards. As they match and cover pictures on their own, they build visual attention and matching skills at their own pace.
-
Parallel play setup: Each player has their own I Spy game board and cards to work through individually, but in a shared space. This is perfect for students who benefit from a side-by-side setup without direct competition.
Easy Differentiation
Every group of players brings different visual skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust so everyone can play.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Use the independent setup with one game board and a small stack of image cards
- Name each picture together before the game begins
- Point to the part of the board where the picture can be found
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written with 2-4 players
- Name each picture out loud when you find it
- Count tokens at the end to see who won
- Rotate through different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Use more game boards and the full set of image cards
- Describe where the picture is on the board, such as "next to the llama"
- Describe a picture by color and shape and have a partner find it
- Challenge players to find the picture before a short timer runs out
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the image cards for speech therapy prompts and labeling practice
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
- Use the boards for occupational therapy visual scanning work
- Offer the parallel play setup for students who prefer independent activity close to peers
- Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed
