-
Made for speech therapy: Every time students say van, violet, vest or vegetables, they practice producing the /v/ sound clearly.
-
Flexible play: Competitive, cooperative or independent play options let every child feel successful at their own level.
-
Easy to prep: Print, laminate and cut once for a game you can use again and again.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Letter sound recognition: Students practice hearing, saying and identifying the /v/ sound in beginning, medial and final positions.
-
Phonemic awareness: Kids work on isolating the /v/ sound and blending it into whole words for stronger decoding skills. (Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and work with the separate sounds in spoken words.)
-
Articulation: Naming each picture gives repeated practice with the /v/ sound for speech therapy targets.
-
Vocabulary growth: From violin to volcano, learners build word knowledge and make stronger picture-to-word connections.
-
Visual discrimination and scanning: Searching a busy board for the correct match strengthens attention to detail.
-
Expressive language: Naming the V words, describing what they see and talking with peers expands oral language skills.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Waiting during group play
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Working independently
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print, laminate and cut apart the game boards, image cards and star tokens.
Step 2: Pick a game board and place it in the middle where everyone can see. Pass out the image cards face down so each player has a neat little stack.
Step 3: Everyone flips a card at the same time and the race begins! The first player to spy the picture on the board and point it out earns a star token. Keep flipping, spotting and collecting tokens until all the cards are gone. The player with the most tokens at the end is the winner!
More Ways to Play
Independent play: One student works through the cards and covers each match with a mini eraser.
Parallel play: Each student has their own board and plays side by side.
Cooperative round: Kids search together and cheer each other on.
Easy Differentiation
Every learner comes to letter sounds at a different pace. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's developmental needs.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Name each picture together and stress the /v/ sound before playing
- Play with one game board and a small stack of image cards
- Start with pictures that begin with /v/, such as volcano, violin and vest
- Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace
For On-Level Practice
- Play the game as written with a small group
- Say each picture name aloud when you find it
- Rotate through the 10 different game boards
For an Extra Challenge
- Read the word on each image card before searching for the picture
- Sort the cards by where the /v/ sound falls: beginning, middle or end
- Use each word in a sentence or describe the picture
- Name another word with the /v/ sound for each picture found
