Long vowel A I Spy game practice that feels like playtime! If your students light up when learning feels like a game, the Long Vowel /a/ I Spy "Flip" Board Game will quickly become a classroom favorite. Kids race to find pictures of words with the long A sound, such as cage, train, acorn and plane.

This hands-on phonics game gives children lots of practice with long A words spelled with CVCe patterns (consonant-vowel-consonant words with a silent e at the end, like gate) and vowel teams (two letters that work together to make one vowel sound, like the ai in paint), plus two-syllable words such as angel and alien. Whether you are targeting long vowel A recognition, articulation goals or visual scanning skills, students will be learning without even realizing it!

With this long vowel A I Spy game, you get

  • 10 full-color I Spy game boards filled with playful illustrations
  • 40 long vowel A picture cards to find on the boards
  • 20 printable star tokens for keeping score
  • Partner, small group, independent and parallel play options
  • Phonics, articulation and visual discrimination practice in every round

Print, laminate and let the spying begin!

What's Included

  • 10 full-color I Spy game boards featuring a variety of playful illustrations
  • 40 long vowel A picture cards with words such as angel, maze, game, paint, sway, cage, alien, acorn, mane, tape, vase, gate, cave, mail, train, plane, scale and braid
  • 20 printable star tokens to award winners or track points
  • Step-by-step teacher instructions for quick prep and multiple ways to play

Each board is filled with clear, easy-to-recognize pictures that give children repeated practice with long vowel A words.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Kids ask to play again: The race to spy each picture first keeps every player watching the board.
  • Focused long vowel practice: Every card features a long vowel A word, so children hear and say the target sound again and again.
  • Quick to prep: Print, laminate and cut apart the pieces and you are ready to play.
  • Easy to store: The small storage size makes it easy to keep everything in one place.
  • Flexible ways to play: Use it with partners and small groups or as an independent or parallel play activity.
  • Great for therapy sessions: Target articulation goals for long vowel A words while keeping sessions fun.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Long vowel A recognition: Children identify and match words with the long A sound in CVCe, vowel team and two-syllable words.
  • Phonemic awareness and decoding: Children strengthen segmenting and blending skills with long vowel A patterns.
  • Visual discrimination: Players pay attention to detail as they scan the board for matching pictures.
  • Vocabulary development: Connecting words to pictures builds both expressive and receptive language.
  • Oral language: Children name the pictures, describe them and use the target words in sentences.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Communicating choices
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the long vowel A picture cards, I Spy game boards and token cards. Laminate for long-term use and cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: Choose one game board and place it in the center. Deal the picture cards to each player. All players flip one card at a time and race to find the matching picture on the board.

Step 3: The first player to spot the correct picture wins a token. Keep flipping and matching until all cards are used. The player with the most tokens wins!

Independent Play

Give one child an I Spy game board and the full stack of word cards. The child flips each long vowel A word card, finds the picture and covers it with a mini eraser or token. This builds visual focus and word recognition independently.

Parallel Play

Two players use separate I Spy game boards and take turns flipping and matching their own word cards at their own pace. This is great for learners who need personal space or are just beginning to join group activities.

Easy Differentiation

Every group of readers brings different phonics skills and attention spans. This game is easy to adjust for classroom differentiation, therapy settings and each child's emotional and developmental needs.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Play with one game board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Name each picture together and stretch the long A sound before the game begins
  • Try parallel play so children can match at their own pace
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search without pressure

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written in a small group
  • Say each word out loud when you find the picture
  • Rotate through different game boards
  • Count tokens at the end to see who won

For an Extra Challenge

  • Tell whether each long A sound is spelled with a silent e or a vowel team
  • Use each word in a sentence after finding the picture
  • Sort the cards by spelling pattern after the game
  • Switch to a new game board every round

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Target articulation goals for long vowel A words as children name each picture
  • Build visual scanning and quick reaction time in OT sessions
  • Build vocabulary for ELL/ESL learners with strong visual cues and repeated practice
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Give extra processing time and use independent or parallel play when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers and guided reading warm-ups
  • RTI and small group interventions
  • Speech therapy articulation games
  • Occupational therapy visual scanning practice
  • ESL/ELL vocabulary practice
  • Homeschool morning baskets
  • Early finishers
  • Substitute plans
  • Rainy day fun and indoor recess
