Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
CVC word decoding and phonemic awareness: Students learn to recognize and read consonant-vowel-consonant words through repetition and exposure in a game format.
-
Short vowel identification: Learners match medial vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) to complete and decode familiar CVC words. The medial vowel is the middle sound in a CVC word.
-
Word-picture association: Picture cards reinforce vocabulary development and visual recognition.
-
Visual discrimination and matching: Comparing images, words and vowel letters strengthens attention to detail.
-
Word families: Five word families for each vowel help students notice spelling patterns.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Waiting during group play
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Respectful competition and sportsmanship
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print, cut and laminate the cards. Choose one card format (picture, word or vowel) to use as the CENTER pile and deal the remaining format cards equally among players as the PLAYING pile.
Step 2: Flip the top CENTER card face up. One at a time, players flip their PLAYING cards into a discard pile.
Step 3: If a PLAYING card matches the CENTER card (by image, word or vowel), the first player to slap it wins the pile! Play until one player collects all the cards. Short on time? The player with the most cards when time runs out wins.
Easy Differentiation
Early readers are all at different places with short vowels. These options make it easy to set up the game for each group.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Play with just two formats, such as pictures and vowel cards
- Focus on one short vowel at a time
- Say each picture name aloud and stretch out the middle sound together
- Play the matching game or a sort before moving to the faster Slap It! game
For On-Level Practice
- Play Slap It! with word cards and picture cards
- Mix two or three short vowels in one game
- Have players read the word aloud when they slap
- Play Go Fish with the word and picture cards
For an Extra Challenge

- Use all five short vowels in one game
- Use the word cards as the CENTER pile so players must read to find a match
- Ask players to name another word from the same word family after each slap
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the picture cards to practice vocabulary and target sounds
- Practice medial vowel sounds with the individual vowel letter cards
- Have students point to or touch the match if slapping is hard
