Why Teachers Love It
-
Vocabulary that fits your units: Community helpers, animal habitats, pets and fun themes give children new words to spy, name and talk about.
-
One set of rules for every game: Once children learn to play, it is quick and easy to change out for a new theme.
-
Repeat play stays fresh: 10 different boards in every game make it harder for players to remember where each picture is hiding.
-
Flexible for any group: The game set works for partner activities and small group activities, so you can choose what works best for your class.
-
Easy to stretch: Make extra copies of the picture cards for longer game play.
-
Quick prep, built to last: Print on card stock, laminate and cut apart the pieces once, then reuse the games all year.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic Skills
-
Visual scanning and discrimination: Players scan busy game boards to find pictures in different sizes and places.
-
Picture matching: Kids match their I Spy card to the same picture on the board, building attention to detail.
-
Focus and attention: As players race to find their picture first, they stay alert and engaged.
-
Speech and language development: Describing pictures and talking about what they see helps children build expressive language and positional words like above, below and next to.
-
Theme vocabulary: Children name community helpers, tools, animals and everyday objects as they play. The Emotions game invites them to name feelings.
-
Quick thinking: Kids develop their own strategies for faster recognition as they play multiple rounds.
Secondary Life & Learning Skills
- Taking turns
- Winning or losing gracefully
- Waiting during group play
- Maintaining attention
- Following directions
- Working independently
- Building confidence during group participation
How to Use It
Step 1: Print the game you want on card stock and laminate the I Spy boards, image cards and tokens. Cut apart the pieces.
Step 2: Set up for 2-4 players. Deal the I Spy cards evenly between players and stack them face down. Each round, all players flip their top card at the same time and race to find that picture on the board.
Step 3: The first player to find the correct picture wins a token card. Keep flipping and searching until all the I Spy cards have been used. The player with the most tokens wins the game!
Independent Play
Give one student a game board and the full stack of cards. The student chooses a card and uses a mini eraser or game marker to cover the matching picture. Perfect for morning tubs, early finishers or quiet time.
Parallel Play
Give two students their own identical game boards. Divide the image cards and let each student search their own board. A great option for students who struggle with shared spaces or competitive play.
Easy Differentiation
Every group has children with different attention spans, vocabulary and comfort with competition. These I Spy games are easy to adjust for each of them.
For Children Who Need More Support
- Use Independent Play so there is no race
- Play with fewer image cards in a round
- Name each picture together before children search
- Point to one section of the board to narrow the search
For On-Level Practice
- Play the standard race with 2-4 players
- Switch to a new board each round
- Rotate through the games that match your current unit
For an Extra Challenge
- Ask players to name the picture before they can win the token
- Have children describe where the picture is on the board using words like above, below and next to
- In the community helpers games, ask children to tell how each helper uses the tools they find
- Make extra copies of the picture cards for longer games
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support
- Use the pictures to practice vocabulary and target sounds
- Practice feeling words with the Emotions game
- Use Parallel Play for children who need their own space
- Have children cover pictures with a game marker or mini eraser for fine motor practice
- Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."

★★★★★ Mary W. wrote: “Love these for my class! Simple for students to grasp and quick and easy for me to change out for the different themes. Because there are 10 different boards to choose from and a growing bundle of themes to grow with really makes it more fun and less likely for players to remember the location of objects with repeat play!”
★★★★★ Catherine V. wrote: “My kiddos love this! I use it for early finishers or in the morning while they are staggering in during breakfast. They are very engaged and enjoy playing!”
