Math War card games your upper elementary students will beg to play again! This bundle brings together five War-style card games for multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and large number place value, packed with high-impact math review for small groups, centers, intervention or even sub plans.

The rules are simple: flip a card, compare the values and the higher value wins. Because every game follows the same format, students learn the routine once and then put all of their energy into the math. They compare numbers, solve facts and practice greater than and less than across multiple math strands, all while having a blast.

With this math War card games bundle, you get

  • 5 complete War-style math card games, ready to print and play
  • Fact fluency practice for multiplication and division
  • Comparison practice with fractions, decimals and whole numbers into the millions
  • Leveled decks and built-in scaffolds for differentiation

Get ready for high-engagement, low-prep math review that covers the key skills your students need!

What's Included

  • Multiplication Facts War Card Game: 15 card sets cover all facts from 1 x 1 to 12 x 12, with bonus mixed sets for differentiation and spiral review
  • Division Facts War Card Game: 15 card sets reinforce basic division facts, fact families and fluency
  • Fraction War Card Game: 8 leveled decks include proper fractions, equivalent fractions and mixed numbers for comparing fractions with like and unlike denominators
  • Decimal Place Value War Card Game: 9 decks build decimal place value understanding to the thousandths and challenge students to compare decimals with accuracy and speed
  • Large Number Place Value War Card Game: 8 decks provide practice comparing whole numbers up to the millions, supporting expanded form and digit value knowledge
  • Deck covers, instructional cards and easy-print formatting for every game
  • Topic-specific rules for each game (for example, how to compare fractions or decimals)

Why Teachers Love It

  • One routine, five topics: Every game uses the same simple War format, so students can jump right into a new math skill without learning new rules.
  • Repeated practice that feels like play: Fast rounds give students many chances to solve facts and compare values in a single game.
  • Easy to differentiate: Leveled decks, mixed sets and built-in scaffolds let you match each group to the skill they need.
  • Low prep and reusable: Print, laminate and store the decks in envelopes or task card boxes for easy year-to-year reuse.
  • Works almost anywhere: Use the games for centers, guided groups, morning tubs, tutoring, test review or sub days.
  • Builds confidence: Students who will never be speed demons can still play, practice and get better with every round.

Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Multiplication fact fluency: Students solve facts from 1 x 1 to 12 x 12 and compare the products.
  • Division fact fluency: Students solve division facts, connect fact families and compare the quotients.
  • Comparing fractions: Students compare proper fractions, equivalent fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators.
  • Decimal place value: Students read decimals and compare their values digit by digit.
  • Whole number place value: Students compare whole numbers up to the millions, using digit value and expanded form.
  • Greater than, less than and equal to: Every round asks students to decide which value is greater.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Maintaining attention
  • Following directions
  • Using mathematical language
  • Communicating choices
  • Building confidence during group participation

How to Use It

Step 1: Print the decks you need, then laminate and cut them apart. Store each deck in an envelope or task card box with its deck cover and instructional card.

Step 2: Teach the simple War-style format, which works the same way for decimal place value, large number place value, multiplication, division and fractions:

  • Deal the Cards: Split the deck evenly between 2 players (or 2 teams).
  • Flip and Compare: Players flip the top card and compare the values.
  • Win the Round: The higher value wins and takes the cards.
  • It's a War: If there's a tie, players go to "battle" by flipping 3 face-down cards and 1 face-up card.
  • Keep Playing: The game continues until time is up or one player wins all the cards.

Step 3: Choose the deck that matches each group's skill level and set the games out in centers, small groups or partner practice. Swap in new decks as students master each set.

Easy Differentiation

Every class has students working on different math skills at different speeds. This bundle makes it simple to meet each student right where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with a single multiplication or division fact set before using the mixed sets
  • Begin with the fraction decks with like denominators
  • Let students use a multiplication chart, place value chart or fraction model to check each round
  • Play in teams so partners can talk through each comparison

For On-Level Practice

  • Play with the decks that match the skills your class is working on now
  • Have students say each comparison aloud, such as "4.36 is greater than 4.24"
  • Rotate a different game through centers each week for spiral review

For an Extra Challenge

  • Use the bonus mixed multiplication and division sets
  • Use the fraction decks with unlike denominators and mixed numbers
  • Ask students to write each comparison with the greater than, less than or equal to symbol
  • Have students explain how they compared two cards using place value or equivalent fractions

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Practice math vocabulary such as greater than, less than, numerator, denominator, tenths and hundredths
  • Use sentence frames such as "___ is greater than ___ because ___."
  • Reduce the deck size for shorter games
  • Give extra processing time and model a few rounds before students play

Perfect For

  • Math centers and guided groups
  • Partner games
  • Early finishers
  • Morning tubs and warm-ups
  • RTI and math intervention
  • Special education classrooms
  • Review before assessments
  • Substitute plans
  • Tutoring sessions
  • Homeschool

Standards

These math War card games support upper elementary standards in Common Core, the TEKS (Math, adopted 2012) and the Virginia Math SOL (2023):

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS 3.OA.C.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100 and recall all products of two one-digit numbers.
  • CCSS 3.NF.A.3.d: Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size.
