Skills Students Practice

Primary Academic Skills

  • Short and long vowel sounds: Vowel games focus children's ears on the short or long sound of a, e, i, o and u.
  • CVC words: The short vowel and CVC medial vowel games feature simple words, such as bud, tub, cub, pug and jug in the Short Vowel /u/ game, with labeled pictures for matching words to pictures.
  • Articulation: Naming each picture gives repeated practice with a target sound.
  • Visual scanning and visual discrimination: Players scan busy game boards to find the exact picture on their card.
  • Vocabulary: Naming and talking about the pictures builds expressive language.

Secondary Life & Learning Skills

  • Taking turns
  • Waiting during group play

How to Use It

Step 1: Print on card stock and laminate the I Spy boards, image cards and tokens. Cut apart the pieces.

Step 2: For 2-4 players, deal the I Spy cards evenly between players and stack them face down. Each player flips the top card from their pile and all players race to find their picture on the board.

Step 3: The first player to find the correct picture wins a token card. Keep flipping and searching until all the I Spy cards have been used. The player with the most tokens wins the game! Extend the play by making additional copies of the picture cards for longer game play.

Materials You'll Need

  • Card stock
  • Laminating pouches and a laminator (for durability)
  • Mini erasers or game markers (for independent play)

Easy Differentiation

Every group of learners is at a different place with sounds and vowels. These games make it easy to match each child to the right sound and the right way to play.

For Children Who Need More Support

  • Start with one letter sound game before moving to the vowel games
  • Name each picture together and stress the target sound before playing
  • Use one board and a small stack of picture cards
  • Play cooperatively without the race so children can search at their own pace

For On-Level Practice

  • Play the game as written with 2-4 players
  • Say each picture name aloud when you find it
  • Rotate through the short vowel or letter sound games that match your phonics lessons

For an Extra Challenge

  • Move on to the long vowel games and the bonus R-controlled vowels game
  • Read the word on each labeled picture card before searching for the picture
  • Name another word with the same sound for each picture found
  • Print extra copies of the picture cards for a longer game

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support

  • Choose the letter sound game that matches a student's articulation goal
  • Use independent play: give one student a board and the full stack of cards to cover each match with a mini eraser or game marker
  • Use parallel play with two identical boards for students who struggle with shared spaces or competitive play
  • Use a short language frame such as "I spy a ___."
  • Give extra processing time and take turns one at a time when needed

Perfect For

  • Literacy centers and small groups
  • Partner games
  • Speech and occupational therapy
  • Morning tubs and early finishers
  • Indoor recess, sensory breaks and transition times
  • ELL support
  • RTI and early intervention
  • Homeschool

★★★★★ Mary W. wrote, "Love these for my class! Simple for students to grasp and quick and easy for me to change out for the different themes. Because there are 10 different boards to choose from and a growing bundle of themes to grow with really makes it more fun and less likely for players to remember the location of objects with repeat play!"

★★★★★ Catherine V. wrote, "My kiddos love this! I use it for early finishers or in the morning while they are staggering in during breakfast. They are very engaged and enjoy playing!"
